Question by Julie T: My 10 year old cat has diabetes. What food is good for him?
My cat was recently diagnosed with diabetes. He gets insulin injections twice a day. The vet recommended Purina DM. I would love to find a good dry & canned food that doesn’t need a prescription & does not need to be purchased from my vet. Thanks for your help.

Question by Eva D: What is normal blood glucose level in a non diabetic person ?
What is the normal range for a non diabetic person after eating more than normal ? Like on a holiday.? And when is the best time for a non diabetic person to check blood glucose ?
Best answer:
Answer by kwgirlroper09 Hi the normal blood glucose in a non-diabetic person is 70-110. But this lab varies with different labs at different doctors offices. It will not vary much though. After a sugary load of food your blood sugar will rise possibly to 150-200. But it does goes down once the pancreas kicks out the insulin. The best time to check your blood sugar for a non-diabetic person is in the AM before you eat breakfast and preferably the night before you did not eat all sugar things. Hope this helped. Happy Thanksgiving.
Question by Michelle T: If your blood glucose numbers are normal, does that definetely mean you don’t have hypoglycemia?
I am 37 yrs old and there comes a time of day at work when I get jittery, my hands will feel shaky, irritable, and seem to loose focus. As soon as I have a small snack or candy, I’m fine. This has been going on for about 4 yrs. It has started happening more lately. I checked my sugar levels and before meals it’s around 87 and after about 99-100. I seem to have all the symptoms except the numbers seem normal.
Best answer:
Answer by Lindsey D Those levels seem quite normal. Usually hypoglycemia is below the 70 and symptoms even lower than that. However, you must consider that your testing kit might not be the most accurate.
If you are really concerned, go and have your fasting blood glucose tests done.
But you probably should consider other things, like are you dieting? are you exercising more? ie dehydration. Consider drinking more fluids at work as you could be working too hard and not considering your fluids could lead to similar symptoms. Low blood pressure can make you feel pretty odd and having a snack would also help with this, but try replacing the snack with fluids and see what happens.
Also, have you started any new medications recently?
Be careful if you have, this could be a side-effect and discussed with your doctor.

Question by Over The Rainbow: Why did a diabetic teaching nurse say to not use Lantis (Injectable Insulin) past 28 days after opened?
There is nothing on the box or bottle that says this.
I notice a “use by” date on the box, but it is for the unopened bottle.
Best answer:
Answer by The mom The makers of insulin will not guarantee effectiveness on vials opened longer than 28 days. Insulin vials begin to lose potency beginning at the moment they are first opened and used. For that reason, you are directed to discard any open vial after that 28 day period. It wouldn’t necessarily harm you, the insulin dose may just not be as effective as it should be, and you would require more. The product insert paperwork will direct you to do this, and you will find that information in the section where it talks about where and how to store your insulin. As a rule, most pharmacies put stickers on the outside of the box directing you to discard the insulin vial after 28 days. You should always record in pen on the side of the vial label the date and time you opened it. This way you will not have to guess when it should be discarded, nor will anyone else who handles it.

Question by Emily24: What would be some good healthy meals for a diabetic truck driver on the go?
my dad has been eating chips and sandwiches for years it’s time to try some good wholesome means but ti’s hard when you have to eat on the go so I need some good nutritional tasty food for a truck driver on the go that’s easy to eat and fast. Please help!! for some good tips, advice, recipes whatever you got give it please .
Best answer:
Answer by Chef Kimi I am diabetic too, and I know it’s super hard to eat out or on the go because you don’t know what it put in the food, and I just recently found out and it’s been hard to figure out the amounts I need to balance everything since I love sugar and carbs! The best tip is to replace your favorites with diabetic things. Now when I bake cookies, instead of sugar I use apple sauce or splenda for example.
I bought an Atkins cookbook since they are lower in carbs but it’s not the unhealthy junk the media portrays it to be, not just bacon, steak, and hot dogs.
You can make him healthy meals and freeze them in little tupperwares so he can heat them up in a microwave at a truckstop or in the truck if he has one.
Wraps are a great on the go food, for breakfast lunch and dinner. Examples:
Turkey Bacon, Eggs, Cheese on a whole wheat tortilla or pita.
Chicken, bacon, cheese, light sauce (ranch, hummus, mustard, etc) and veggies on whole wheat wrap or pita
A sandwich is just fine if he loves them, but make sure it’s the healthiest possible. Whole wheat bread (make sure the first ingredient is 100% whole wheat/stone ground flour, not enriched wheat flour) it should have at least 2 grams of fiber per slice. I eat lunch at Subway almost everyday, and I just make sure to get mustard as a sauce since I know it’s sugar free and no carbs, and make sure the bread is wheat or honey oat.
He should only be drinking water or crystal light if he can because this will allow him to use the sugars he does eat daily for foods he enjoys. I love pepsi but I rather drink water all day if it means I can have a small bowl of ice cream or snack cake when I want a regular dessert.
Snacks he can keep on hand
Popcorn
Peanut Butter (Great alone, or with an apple, etc-its filling, quick, and if you buy the ones with only peanuts and salt in it it’s healthy too)
Veggies/hummus
Soups
Whole grain bagels/english muffins
*I didn’t include fruits because my Dr. says for me it counts as a sugar since Im not on meds and don’t want to be.
Since he is on the road so much he needs to make sure he gets enough exercise as that helps lower blood sugar and improve circulation.
Question by Ali B: can a vegetarian diet reverse diabetes? imean vegetarian(with eggs and dairy) not vegan share your testimony?
Best answer:
Answer by sue so sorry!! you cannot reverse diabetes by any food or exercise program. You can only control the problem.
It isn’t the meats or fats that cause the problem. It is some of the vegetables and a lot of the fruits and starchy foods like cereals and grains.
A vegetarian diet nor a vegan diet will solve the problem. It will probably only make it worse.
A lot of the dairy causes me to have very high glucose numbers because most of it is sold “low fat” “reduced fat” or “no fat”. This causes rapid high spikes in the glucose numbers.
Whole milk, cream, butter, whole milk yogurt, and whole milk cottage cheese help me to stay a bit more level and still eat dairy foods.
Meats: beef, lamb, chicken, fish are all protein and do not enter the system as sugar! They eventually break down to produce a little sugar into the system.
Rices, Cereals, Oats, other grains all rapidly become sugar in the digestive tract. They spike glucose numbers high and fast.
Starchy vegetables like corn, peas, carrots, potatoes and dried beans all have the same effect of becoming sugar really rapidly and spiking the glucose numbers high.
Sweet soft fruits do the same thing. They are mostly sugar to begin with and what isn’t, isn’t worth eating.
